This book is a great hip-pocket manual, for most general topics when it comes to having your own flock. I’d recommend it as a first book, or as a supplement to other sources of info.
Aside from researching on the internet, reading message boards, and watching videos on YouTube to learn about new interests, we try to read books as often as we can. I downloaded “The Short, Sweet, and Self-Sufficient Guide to The Working Chicken” because it was offered for free, and we were just starting to think about getting some backyard chickens. Like it says on the cover, “Learn everything…. in 30 Minutes or less!” you can cruise from cover to cover in a little less time than that. The book is written in a Q&A style, which makes it easy to skim or keep as a reference.
Keeping chickens isn’t rocket science, but are many different things to consider and topics that may only need to be addressed occasionally… such as What breed of chickens should I get? Author Anna Hess even points the reader to other sources of information for more technical or in-depth explanations.
